A comprehensive, 3-hour program that covers details of the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, XTi and the new Rebel XSi digital SLRs. The first two hours basically cover the theme, “Take control of your camera — take control of your photography”. Beginning with a basic review of camera operations (primary controls, operation of the shutter button, playing back and erasing images), it then moves into going beyond the simple Green zone exposure settings, with a full explanation of each exposure mode along with quick photo basics on shutter speeds and apertures. All three metering options (Evaluative,
Center-weighted, and Partial) are examined, and examples shown on-screen to illustrate both their operation and to give examples of when each might be advantageous. The first hour concludes with the use of the Rebel’s Exposure Compensation, showing why it’s sometimes needed and how to apply it, along with a non-technical explanation of the camera’s histogram function.
After a brief break (where customers are free to ask questions of the presenter and other Canon and HCE staff at the event... light refreshments are also provided), the second hour concludes discussion of exposure control by detailing the digital SLR’s ISO function, with examples of when low or high ISO settings are often used. Flash is discussed in detail, for both the built-in flash as well as accessory speedlites. The second hour finishes with a comprehensive account of the Digital Rebel’s autofocus system, explaining the settings with on-screen examples to clearly illustrate the different operations and options offered by the focus system.
The third hour concludes the presentation, with the theme, “take control of your images”. In this session, we explain many of the Digital Rebel’s in-camera controls that influence the look of a user’s pictures, from white balance to Parameters and Picture Styles. We begin with a brief, non-technical explanation of how digital imaging works, and follow that with a concise explanation of the JPEG and RAW image settings and some of their applications. In-camera controls that change the appearance
of pictures are then discussed, and the presentation concludes with a quick discussion of some of the possibilities that the next step in digital imaging offers — optimizing images in the computer.
The program targets the amateur customer, whether he or she is a newcomer to SLRs entirely, or the customer who has owned 35mm film SLRs in the past, but is now getting into their first digital SLR. If you already own one of these cameras, make sure you bring it so you can follow along with the instructor.
